In the streets winding down from Plaza Mayor I arrived at Juan Raro, recommended by a local friend this is one of those places about which only locals would know. The exterior is quite arty with the option to sit outside but considering the cold we chose a nice table next to window. The first thing you notice about this place is how clean and chic it is without being pretentious.
Located in the neighborhood of Lavapies, one of the most multicultural and upcoming area Juan Raro stands for Espana Moderna in a very arty and cultural sense leading by example.
The staff was very friendly and made us feel very welcomed even though it was quite busy with lots of people chattering and enjoying their drinks. The menu was only in Spanish but the waiter went through all of the options and we decided on a starter made with 2 fish, anchovies and Boqueron; one in vinegar and other in olive oil on a bed of tomato sauce with unsalted crisps and some potatoes with different sauces. My God! The starters were absolutely amazing, lick, lick, lick!!!
For mains I chose these soft rolls of duck on a bed of spinach and balsamic sauce. The rolls were moist, soft and the duck was juicy and succulent without any hint of dryness or uneven spices. Within 10 minutes I was greedily looking at the dessert menu and on recommendation chose this bread and ice cream choice. The bread has a sweet crust like French toast and comes with a scoop of lemon sorbet ice cream. Absolutely divine!!!
Right now I am sipping my coffee and writing this review and feeling blessed for an awesome evening with great food in Madrid…
