The second most populous city in the world with more than 23 million people is the proud host of one of the best French restaurants I have ever been to outside France. This was quite a surprise until I met the owner through a French friend who’s a French lady; married to the son of the most popular female singer of the country, she runs this place in her style with her authentic recipes and most importantly with her sweet accent.
Cafe Flo is based in Clifton not far from the beach and is the best spot for a nice relaxed dinner. You will see plenty of expats here but the central courtyard still has a bit of local feel and in summer evenings you will feel the Arabian Sea rush through your hair while you are enjoying your food.
We chose rocket salad with walnuts raspberry sauce and Roquefort mushrooms and French onion soup with Emmenthal cheese. The food arrived promptly while we sipped our mint lagoon. The salad was perfectly crispy and the cheese very tasty. We were old the ingredients are sourced locally but if the taste differ they need to be imported from France which makes this place quite expensive by local standards. The cheese was absolutely amazing and make the soup much heartier. My friends asked me to try the snails which was an alien concept to me and somewhat icky too but my god!!! I fell in love with this delicacy which is served with parsley butter and bread. I went on to try this a lot in Paris but I think the nostalgia attached to this memory made it much better than any other.
Then arrived the main course; Belg fillet steak and charcoal grilled fish with pomegranate sauce. The Roquefort sauce with the steak and the porcini mushrooms made me feel like the luckiest man on the planet.
Now when you come to a French place you CANNOT leave without trying the Creme Brûlée; I have this eternal love-love relationship with this dessert. As expected it surpassed all ideas and we got up with full stomachs, big smiles and empty pockets to take a walk on the Clifton beach to process the food and relax some more.
