Mamuska

Polish food; one of the mysteries for me, on all previous occasions I’ve had it it’s been a mixed feeling, some were really awesome and some quite bad so to get an idea of what the most famous Polish restaurant we headed to Mamuska.

This used to be a small deli inside the Elephant and Castle Shopping mall and recently acquired and moved into a bigger and much nicer space across the road.

We got ourselves a reservation for a Thursday evening and went bustling with excitement. The exterior is quite normal with a few Christmas decorations making it festive and Aince the interior is already red it was quite a match. We were told to pick a table of our choice since there were a few available and we chose the window seat. This is a self service cafe style restaurant, you get a menu, you choose the food, go to the ordering area, order and then once your order number is displayed, collect the food from collection area.

We chose beef prices with fried onions and spinach patties with sour cream for starters along with some wings. For main course we chose beef goulash soup with mashed potatoes and potato pancakes with beef. The food arrives at once unless you specifically tell them to call you separately for both courses.

The patties or Pierogi were quite nice and soft, both spinach and beef were nice and soft and sauce was great. These patties or big dumplings come with the option of chicken beef pork or vegetarian and you can choose the quantity separately.

The potato pancakes with beef or Placki Ziemniaczane were nice with soft beef although the sauce looked quite dubious and bland with no real flavour. The biggest disappointment was Beef Gulasz or goulash soup which had very hard and dry beef, we left it mainly untouched.

As the evening went by hoards of people came in and we found ourselves in the middle of Poles of all size and shapes which was a nice experience.

They do have a big collection of Polish beer but sadly the wines were below average at best. For a one time visit to get the taste of Polish good this is a good place to go but food wise it was slightly above average.
